Rabbi Moses ben Maimon "Maimonides" (yartzeit, 20 Tevet) is buried a short distance from the town center on Ben Zakkai Street. Reciting the Thirteen Articles of Faith, that he authored, at his grave is a special way of bonding with this twelfth century sage.
Rabbi Akiva (yartzeit, Yom Kippur, 10 Tishrei) is buried half way up the hillside past Rechov Hashomer Street. Once a poor shepard, he began his scholarly career at the age of 40 after insistence of his wife Rachel that he could be a great scholar. After studying for over 24 years he became one of the most famous Jewish sages. He systematized the material that later became the Mishnah and after a long life was murdered al Kiddish Ha'Shem by the Romans for teaching Torah. While being tortured in his last moments he said Shema, and when questioned by his students he replied that all his life he had been waiting to fulfill the concept 'You shall love Hashem, your G-d, with all your heart and with all your soul...' and now he finally had the chance."
Moses Chaim Luzzatto the "Ramchal" (yartzeit, 26 Iyar), is buried a few meters east of Rabbi Akiva. He was a scholar and kabbalist from 18th century Italy and the author of Mesillat Yesharim (The Path of the Just), Derech Hashem, (The Path of G-d) and other kabbalistic books. From a young age, the Ramchal learned Torah and Kabbalah from a maggid – a Divine messenger from Heaven. He also merited to learn the mysteries of the Torah with Elijah the prophet. He also said that he was a gilgul of Rabbi Akiva (thus they are buried together).
Ancient Cemetery of Tiberias
The beautiful cemetery overlooking Lake Kinneret is the resting place for many Tzaddikim. Rabbi Isaiah ben Avraham HaLevi Horowitz the "Shlah" (yartzeit, 11 Nisan), was a renowned leader, kabbalist, and halachic guide from the 17th century. He stressed joy in every action, and how one should convert the evil inclination into good. Rabbi Nachman Horodenker (yartzeit, 2 Tammuz), was a student of the Baal Shem Tov and the paternal grandfather of Rebbe Nachman of Breslev. There are also numerous other students of the Baal Shem Tov buried in the cemetery.
Rabbi Meir Baal HaNeis (yartzeit, 14 Iyar, Pesach Sheni) on the same street as the ancient cemetery, there is a large domed synagogue over his grave. He was one of the main expounders of the Mishna. The custom of saying "Eloka d'meir aneini,""the G-d of Meir, Answer me !" three times and giving charity in the memory of Rebbe Meir, is a segula for finding lost objects and for salvation in all times of trouble.
Rachel, (yartzeit unknown) wife of Rabbi Akiva, was once a wealthy woman and was disinherited by her father, Kalba Savua, upon marrying her husband. She had tremendous faith in her husband's abilities and it was at her insistence that he left to study Torah for 24 years. When he returned with his 24,000 students she apporached him and bowed at his feet. His students not knowing who she was tried to push her away. Rabbi Akiva exclaimed "Let her be! All of my Torah study and all of yours is because of her."
